HealthcareCommunity Services WorkerCommunity Services Workers provide many types of assistance to people in the community, from determining eligibility for social assistance and health programs and counseling on child care to helping clients with physical and mental problems and those involved in drug and substance abuse. Students are prepared to write certificate exams for: - First Aid and CPR - Non-Violent Crisis Intervention - A.S.I.S.T. Medical Office AdministratorThis Program provides an overview of clinical office principals, practices, and operations with focus on developing clinical office assistant skills. Areas of study include medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology, clinical procedures, clinical office procedures, computer applications such as spreadsheets, presentations, databases and word processing, as well as clinical office scheduling and billing software. This program includes Guest Speakers and students go on a “backstage tour” of St. Michael’s Hospital and the Queen Street Mental Health Facility. Herzing College offers a 10-month diploma program that includes a 6 week internship to gain work experience. TechnologyComputer Networking TechnologyThe objective of this program is to provide the skills, knowledge and practical experience to work effectively in positions including technical support, computer maintenance/repair, hardware/software installation and network administration. Throughout the program, the essential technical skills are delivered from a theoretical perspective, complimented by extensive hands-on use. Microprocessors, networks, and data communication knowledge required by systems technicians are covered. Students will have learned the skills to successfully achieve industry certifications as well as apply their core knowledge to learning new systems and skills in the workplace.
Information Technology ManagementThis program prepares students with the necessary academic knowledge and technical competencies for entry-level administration and/or management positions in the computer network and internet technology industry. These career opportunities may be in areas such as network installation, network administration, and network support. This program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to install, configure, manage, and maintain computer network systems. The program focuses on Microsoft®-based desktop and sever systems, including database and web servers.
Police and Protection ServicesLaw ClerkThis program provides an overview of legal principles, practices, and procedures. Areas of study include law office procedures, English, word processing, legal theory, and the practical application of the law in various law settings. Graduates will be prepared to work in law offices or legal departments of many organizations in several sectors. Graduates should find employment opportunities with law firms, government offices, private industry, accountants, and real estate companies.
Law and Legal AdministrationParalegalThis program provides an overview of legal principles, practices and procedures. Areas of study include law office procedures, word processing, legal theory and the practical application of the law in various law settings. Paralegals will also learn how to represent clients in Small Claims Court. Herzing College’s Paralegal program has been approved by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities for the Law Society under Bill 14. Graduates may choose to work in a law firm or establish their own Paralegal practice once they have passed the exam through the Law Society to become a licensed Paralegal. Herzing College offers a one-year diploma program that includes a one-month internship to gain work experience. High School/Life Skills UpgradingPersonal Support WorkerPersonal Support Workers assist with the tasks of daily living. Services are provided in homes and apartments in the community, in long-term facilities, congregate housing settings and day programs. Personal Support Workers must develop a broad range of abilities beyond dexterity skills. They must provide not only for the comfort, safety and well-being of their clients, but also demonstrate sensitivity and respect for those in their care. The attitude, abilities and approach of the worker are critical to the well-being and health of the people they support. The program length is 26 weeks.
Health SciencesPharmacy AssistantPharmacy Assistants play an important role in providing essential health care services in their communities. They order and receive medications and pharmaceutical supplies. They utilize specialized software to maintain patient profiles, prescription orders, and inventories. Pharmacy Assistants compound prescribed pharmaceutical products by calculating, measuring, and mixing the quantities of drugs and other ingredients required. They assist pharmacists by ordering, packaging and labeling pharmaceutical products and by maintaining prescription records and inventories of medication and pharmaceutical products. Working with the registered Pharmacist, Pharmacy Assistants demonstrate tact and excellent judgment to ensure confidentiality of sensitive information. Upon graduation, Pharmacy Assistants can work in either a community, clinic or hospital pharmacy. Job opportunities also exist in government health departments, insurance and pharmaceutical companies. Some common job titles include: pharmacy Assistants, pharmacy technical assistant, and pharmacy aide. Students take their First Aid and CPR certificate course. Herzing College offers a one-year diploma program that includes a two-month practical placement to gain work experience. Arts - Design / AnimationWeb DeveloperThe purpose of the program is to prepare students with the necessary skills and academic knowledge for entry-level technical positions in a Web site development, administration and design environment. The program also provides an integrated approach to Web site design by providing instruction in client-side Web site design techniques and Web site management procedures through converging theoretical concepts and practical applications.
Courses that develop this integrated approach to Web site development include the study Web scripting languages such as HTML, XML, JavaScript, PHP, ASP and AJAX ; Web graphic packages such as Photoshop, Flash, and Fireworks ; and Web authoring tools such as Dreamweaver and SharePoint Designer.
